Fitness Friday: Don't Skimp on Stretching

Don't Skimp on Stretching
!

Friday's Fitness Tip by Jamie Temple, ACE, ACSM, Personal Trainer/Fitness Specialist

"Don't skimp on stretching, don't skimp on stretching, don't skimp on stretching..."

I have to repeat this over and over in my head every time I'm done with my cardio and strength workout at the gym.  As a personal trainer, stretching is the first thing to go when I'm on a time crunch and in between clients.

During busy days, I may have three 25-minute periods to get in a quickie workout and stretching isn't part of the schedule. I need to start practicing what I preach.

A new study came out from Brigham Young University - Hawaii sending the message that stretching will not only improve flexibility but also helps maintain the integrity of the muscle and increases power and strength even if not participating in a strength training program. WOW!

Those whacky Yogi ladies and Mom must have known all along.  Vinyansa Yoga, here I come.

Remember to pick one stretch for each body part and hold for at least 30 seconds.  If time allows, hold for up to a minute so you can jump higher, run faster, and accomplish other super hero-like feats of strength.

Perform static stretching by holding the stretch, and if you can, slowly -- I repeat, slowly increasing the range of motion.

DO NOT attempt ballistic stretching by doing a quick stretch followed by relaxation of the muscle group.  This can be problematic and cause injuries.

Can't stretch after every workout?  Shoot for three times a week to see results.

Hooray for BYU Hawaii! I love stretching, but always forget to do this. Thanks for the fabulous Friday fitness tip.
