Independent Beauty Product Review: Anastasia Brow Wiz

picture of a woman looking in a hand mirror and plucking her eyebrows

This independent beauty product review of Anastasia Brow Wiz Mechanical Brow Pencil ($19) is reviewed by Beckie and Jamie.

Beckie: Your eyes may be the window to your soul, but your eyebrows capture the essence of your spirit, and Anastasia is the patron saint of brows.

Jamie: Anastasia 'Brow Wiz' Mechanical Brow Pencil is God's answer to overplucked brows. Yes, I am an overplucker.

Beckie: Jamie, you know that thick, naturally arched eyebrows are the current trend.

Jamie: I know, Mom.

Beckie: The ultra fine pencil tip mimics teeny tiny hairs, which is ideal for filling in my sparse, thin brows.

Jamie: I used short strokes to extend my brow. Because the "mechanical" pencil's tip is so fine, the hairs that I "drew" look natural.

Beckie: Being blond, I struggle with finding colors suitable for my light brows, and that's why I have always turned to Anastasia for brow color. Her lighter colors are exceptionally natural looking. I would suggest Medium Ash for light to dark blondes like us and Brunette for dark brown to black hair.

Jamie: We are also trying Anastasia Brow Enhancing Serum which purports to slow down excess hair loss and stimulates hair regeneration and renewal. It generally requires two months of continued use, so check back in October for our review. We hopefully will have those "thick, naturally arched eyebrows" that Mom was recommending.

Are you an over-plucker?

Beauty Product Review: Tawaka Ancient Tribal Rejuvenating Conditioner

picture of Tawaka Ancient Tribal Rejuvenating Conditioner in a brown plastic bottle

Beauty Product Review: Tawaka Ancient Tribal Rejuvenating Conditioner by Ojon (Sephora $32)

I wouldn't call myself patient. I abhor sitting in the salon chair for hours on end to get highlights. So in preparation for the 4th of July weekend, I jumped in my car and headed to CVS for a highlighting kit. You probably know where this is headed.

Hair disaster! My normally ash blond hair now has sections that are gray, dry, and brittle. My saving grace is pulling it back in a ponytail.

The other saving grace is that Tawaka Ancient Tribal Rejuvenating Conditioner and Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment (which I will review in another post) hydrated and restored a healthy look to my overprocessed, fried locks. My tresses were silky and smooth, not sizzling. Unfortunately, the gray streaks remained until I used -- well, that's another story for another day.

Why is Tawaka Ancient Tribal Rejuvenating Conditioner Unique?

Although the product is light copper in color, the conditioner contains the equivalent of 125 pounds of blueberries.

With many studies purporting that blueberries improve short-term memory, do you think continued use of this conditioner will improve my -- what was I talking about?

Oh, yeah, memory. I guess that really would be brains on beauty.
Pros:
  • 98% natural
  • intensively moisturizing
  • enriched with antioxidants
  • sulfate-free
  • conditioning treatment for the hair, scalp, and body
  • natural scent
  • enriched with Ojon oil found in the rainforests

Cons: I con not think of any, except the price.

Beauty Product Review: Laura Geller's New Baked Body Frosting

picture of an open compact of Laura Geller Baked Body Frosting
Beauty Product Review: Laura Geller Baked Body Frosting (Sephora $40) - New!

Okay, girls, I have found another beauty product that doesn't turn my pale skin orange: Laura Geller Baked Body Frosting. I shouldn't be surprised. Laura Geller Bronze-N-Brighten Twisted Toner has been my Holy Grail of natural-looking bronzers. (How many HG's can one woman have? Technically, only one.) But Baked Body Frosting is not just a bronzer: It's the icing on the cake -- er, the body.

What it is?

An extremely fine, silky smooth powder that adds a warm, bronze luminosity to the body. What it does: Laura Geller created her unique Baked Body Frosting for whenever you want skin that's polished to perfection. This baked body productadds a little sexy bronzed shimmer to your arms, legs, shoulders, back, décolleté, and even to the nape of your neck. The Honey Glow hue kisses your skin with the sun-warmed radiance of wholesome, golden, outdoor color. A Body Puff is also included, and its lush texture picks up just the right amount of Baked Body Frosting to give you that perfect glow.

What else you need to know? To give this exceptional formula a more luxurious feel, and to provide the moist dewy look of well-hydrated skin, a few special drops of ceraphyl oil are added for moisture. Laura Geller Baked Body Frosting is paraben- and mineral oil-free, with the antioxidants white tea and centella asiatica added for extra care.

swatch of Laura Geller Baked Body Frosting

The Honey Glow swatch is of my inner arm. (On my computer, the swatch looks darker than in person.)

Pros: The addition of ceraphyl oil makes Baked Body Frosting amazingly hydrating, and the shimmer adds smoke and mirrors to wrinkled and blotchy skin. The fluffy puff is of very good quality, and allows you to dust your arms, legs, shoulders, and back with a light touch. Just out of curiosity, I dusted the product on my face, and it could also work as a facial bronzer -- at night (shimmer). Since I loved the product, I was delighted to know that Baked Body Frosting is paraben- and mineral oil-free.

Cons: Since I was icing Laura Geller Baked Body Frosting all over my body, I would have hoped it wouldn't transfer to my clothing. Unfortunately, there is some transfer.

Beauty Product Review: Stila Cherry Crush Lip and Cheek Stain

picture of Stila Cherry Cruch Lip and Cheek Stain

Beauty Product Review: Stila Cherry Crush Lip and Cheek Stain ($24 Only at Sephora.)

If you looked up "life is a bowl of cherries" -- crushed cherries, that is -- in the beauty cliché dictionary, you would find a picture of Stila Cherry Crush Lip and Cheek Stain. I might have named the product "Cherry Popcicle Lip and Cheek Stain." Very yummy either way.

What it is?

A multi-tasking lip and cheek stain. What it is formulated to do: This revolutionary makeup stain moisturizes, provides antioxidant protection and has a unique look on each person's skin, creating the perfect shade every time. Housed in a berry red click pen adorned with a silver cherry blossom design, Cherry Crush reacts to the pH levels in the cheeks and lips creating a personalized blush and pout.

In addition to being scented and flavored like a just-picked cherry, Cherry Crush contains cherry and pomegranate extracts to provide skin and lips with antioxidant protection. Vitamins A, C & E are the cherry on top, as they provide further antioxidant protection and drench the skin in moisture, ensuring skin and lips never feel dry or tight.

Here is a swatch of the color on my pale arm skin:picture of swatch of Stila cherry crush lip and cheek stain on pale arm skin

Here is a swatch of the color that is shown on Sephora's site:

picture of pink swatch from Stila Cherry Crush Lip and Cheek Stain

The "just picked cherry" scent is not in the least overpowering.

Most stains I have tried are very drying, but with the added antioxidants and vitamins, this one provides a lot of moisture. Unlike Benetint, which I used for a couple of years, Stila Cherry Crush doesn't seep into the fine lines on your lips or accentuate wrinkles. The applicator is much easier to use than Benetint, too. (I have spilled and splattered Benetint on every conceivable surface.)

Like most stains, the staying power is superior to that of lip liners or lipsticks. Although the color faded as the day wore on, the swatch that I applied to my arm remained even after showering! Cherry Crush overstayed its visit. I was ready for a new guest on my lips.

Because the color reacts with the skin's pH and is supposed to "have a unique color on each person's skin," I honestly can't predict how well it will work with your chemistry. As you can see from the swatch above, on my skin it is more sunburn rosy pink than red cherry pink.

Beauty Product Review: Benefit's New Talk To The Tan

picture of ad for Benefit Talk to the Tan, a blonde tan girl with sunglasses onBeauty Product Review: Benefit Talk To The Tan - NEW

Having tired of self-tanning products that leave my skin a QT orange, I have resorted to Clinique Non-Streak Bronzer for Men ($14) for the last couple of years. It is such a natural looking color that when I use the gel, friends will ask, "Have you been in the sun?"

Now comes the competition -- Benefit's new product, Talk To The Tan, is a bronze facial tint with a tan-i-tude.

I thought, "It will never trump Clinique."

It not only trumped Clinique, it's an ace in the hole!

The color is the most natural, sun-kissed look on the market today.

Smooches! I love being sun-kissed.

Of course, I am a pale face, but how would it look on your skin?

I enlisted the help of the Sephora sales associates and asked them to apply it to their skin, and from olive-skinned to medium-skinned, the color still looked natural, not faux or orange.

Beauty Trick: If you feel that any gel bronzer is too dark for your pale face, mix it with tinted moisturizer before you apply it to your face.

WHO IS THE THEVI WOMAN?

She represents the New Ethnic Market. She is every light-to-dark skinned woman of Asian, South Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean descent. Sophisticated. Educated. With a multi-faceted lifestyle. Usually first generation American, she holds to the traditions of her family and her ethnic roots, often has close ties to the cultural diversity of other ethnic communities, while being deeply involved with the modern American lifestyle. She may require a collection of cosmetic colors that are rich and vibrant without being harsh.

Beauty Product Review: Philosophy's NEW Hope in a Jar SPF 20

picture of Philosophy's Hope in a Jar with SPF 20 and with a picture of the sun and the words philosophy where there is darkness, there can be light and where there is light, there must be sensibilityBeauty Product Review: Philosophy Hope in a Jar SPF 20 - NEW!

Whenever we ask a dermatologist, "What is the No 1 anti-aging cream?" they always answer, "Sunscreen!" Just in time for summer, Philosophy's cult favorite Hope in a Jar has added SPF 20 to the mix. We not only love the snippets of philosophy that are provided on Philosophy products, but we also love the results.

What it is formulated to do: Give your skin the drink of water it's thirsty for while protecting it from the harmful effects of the sun with Philosophy Hope in a Jar SPF 20. Hope in a Jar high-performance moisturizer with SPF 20 hydrates the skin, provides a gentle exfoliation, and helps improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, texture, and tone. This multi-tasking moisturizer helps prevent further sun-damage with multiple antioxidants and broad spectrum sun protection while inspiring a healthy, rosy glow.

0.5 oz:Active Ingredients: Avobenzone (3.00%), Homosalate (3.00%), Octisalate (5.00%), Octocrylene (2.75%), Oxybenzone (4.00%). Inactive Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Lauryl Lactate, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Glyceryl Stearate, Glycerin, Diethylhexyl Syringylidene Malonate, Stearyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Behenoxy Dimethicone, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyl Dimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Cyclohexasiloxane, Polyacrylate-15, Polyacrylate-17, Beta Glucan, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinyl Palmitate, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Panthenol, Arginine, Lactic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Tetrasodium Edta, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Potassium Sorbate, Hexylene Glycol.

Unlike the original formula, the world-famous therapeutic moisturizer contains lactic acid, but the orginal formula contained "lauryl lactate," which did not have the exfoliating abilities as claimed. The souffle of ingredients are light and fluffy and are absorbed into your skin quickly, leaving your skin smooth and soft.

Brains on Beauty: With the addition of SPF 20 and lactic acid, it's not the fountain of youth, but it is hope in a jar. Any woman's skin should benefit from the exfoliation, and of course, the SPF.

Where to buy: Only at Sephora ($18 for 0.5 ounces and $45 for 2 ounces.)

Beauty Product Review: L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Any Angle Spray

picture of L'Oreal Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist in an orange can

Beauty Product Review: L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist

The first attempt to test L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist, my aim was too wild for this child, and my roommate looked like a spotted hyena, except she wasn't laughing. After my first botched attempt, the airbrush mist delivered a super-fine mist, and about 45 minutes later, my legs looked like I had spent the day at the pool.

I didn't need to rub the product on my legs, so there was no telltale self-tanner on my hands.
The color was very natural and worked well on my olive skin. Unfortunately, it only comes in medium, but I reapplied the product three more times that week, and I reached the depth I wanted. L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist is a spray tanning salon in a bottle.

  • 360 Degree continuous spray.

  • Ultra-even application.
    No rub - quick dry.

  • Streak-free.

  • A first from the L'Oreal laboratories, Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Airbrush Self Tanning Mist gives you professional airbrush tanning results at home.

  • The super-fine mist applies evenly and flash-dries, so there is no need to rub in.

  • Perfect for hard to reach places like your back and the back of your legs.

  • Now you're the pro.

  • Results: Ultra-even, microfine mist applies easily and dries rapidly. 100% Natural-looking
sunless tan begins to develop in less than an hour

L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Self-Tanning Mist are available at chain drug, food, and mass market retailers nationwide for a suggested retail price of $9.99.

Perfume Review: Wellness by Clean - Harmony

My scent wardrobe is anorexically thin, but when I discovered Wellness by Clean (Harmony), I devoured it.

Harmony is the perfect accessory to wear when you're feeling overwhelmed because your dog, who should have been named Houdini, escaped from his invisible fence for the tenth time in a month.

Harmony hangs on you like organic silk organza: Crisp. Sheer. Incredibly light and airy. Not clingy.

Harmony is Kate Hudson, hippie chic, free and loose with a twist of sexy.

Harmony is Sienna Miller, relaxed, sexy but still approachable, reminiscent of beachy chic.

Harmony is ...

Simple.

Relaxed.

Sexy.

Harmony Eau de Parfum from Wellness by Clean celebrates the joy of well-being.
The fragrance opens with uplifting top notes of sparkling Italian lemon,
eucalyptus, and rosemary, and at the heart of the accord are soft and subtle
rose, sheer jasmine, and orange blossom.

Harmony is grounded by a base of creamy cedarwood and musk, conspiring for a fresh fragrance to promote centered, balanced living. Part of the Wellness by Clean Collection, when this fragrance is applied to the body's key pressure points, it brings the tranquility and calm of a spa atmosphere to every moment of the day, promoting lasting well-being and sensations of serenity.

The scent is free of synthetics or petroleum, and the formula's corn-derived alcohol base is safe for even more sensitive skin types. Natural ingredients such as green tea, vitamin E, and floral extracts contribute to the overall calming and wellness qualities, further ensuring peace of mind.

Notes: Italian Lemon, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Rose, Jasmine, Orange Blossom, Cedarwood, Musk.

For me, the top note was refreshing lemon; the middle note, calming eucalyptus; and the base note, a blend of sexy musk and energizing orange blossom.

Harmony...peace of mind.

Beauty Product Review: L'Oreal Skin Genesis

picture of L'Oreal serum in a silver containerBeauty Product Review: L'Oreal Skin Genesis Daily Moisturizer Oil-Free Lotion and L'Oreal Skin Genesis Serum Concentrate.

Did you know that your hands age faster than your face? The skin on the backs of the hands are much thinner than the skin on your face. When even a tiny amount of collagen begins to break down, it can leave the skin on your hands wrinkly, crinkly, crepelike, with bulging veins, which also grow larger over time!

picture of L'Oreal Skin Genesis Oil-Free Lotion in a pink containerSince I was treating my face with Hyalis, for this review, I decided to test the skin on my hands.

For as long as I can remember, I have had wrinkly, crinkly, crepelike skin and veins that bulge so much that the back of my hands look like a 3D road map of the United States. This genetically inherited curse flys in the face -- or skin of my real age.

genesis: beginning; the coming into being of something; the origin.

To cut to the chase, Skin Genesis was a new beginning for my hands. After weeks of applying both products two times a day to my hands, I didn't see a substantial difference in the bulging veins, but I did see a significant difference in the level of softness.

I annoyingly asked friends and family to participate in my Soft Hand Analysis Test. Amazingly, my hands were significantly softer than their hands! Seriously. It was a Miracle on Hand Street.

But this is where the miracle ends.

Unfortunately, my baby boomer hands didn't morph into hands of a hand model (channeling George Costanza on Seinfeld). In my humble opinion, only two options exist to mitigate the bulging veins: (1) Like George Costanza, wear oven mitts; (2) Plump the hands with Juverderm, and I'm not going there.

Okay, I could easily fall hard for the tempting title "ALLURE Best of Beauty Beauty Breakthrough in October 2007" and the L'Oreal verbiage that promotes their product --

Moisturizer strengthens skin, leaving it smoother, healthier and more even. The exclusive formula includes a SPF 15 sunscreen to help protect skin against damaging UVA/UVB sun exposure. The first step to stronger, tighter, younger-looking skin. This unique, crystal clear highly concentrated treatment deeply penetrates skin’s surface to even skin tone and immediately tighten. Skin Strengthening Benefits builds strength deep within skin’s surface. Reinforces skin’s matrix to add fullness, improve elasticity, and renew skin’s evenness from within. Strengthens between skin’s layers. Helps promote healthy collagen production to fortify skin's structure and support. Smooths the surface layer. Boosts cellular renewal to help erase fine lines, and instantly hydrates for more even, light-reflective skin.
-- but I have fallen hard for other seducing verbiage and have suffered a broken heart.

I'm a born-again sceptic.

Brains on Chemistry: The products contain the following ingredients:

Active Ingredients - Ensulizole 1.8%, octinoxate 7.5% Inactive Ingredients - water, glycerin, alcohol denat., cyclohexasiloxane, dimethicone, silica, peg-20 methyl glucose sesquistearate, caprylic/capric triglyceride, polymethyl methacrylate, cyclopentasiloxane, ammonium polyacryloyldimethyl taurate, triethanolamine, hydroxyethylpiperazine ethane sulfonic acid, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), hdi/trimethylol hexyllactone crosspolymer, dimethiconol, caprylyl glycol, titanium dioxide, mica, hydroxypropyl tetrahydropyrantriol, divinyldimethicone/dimethicone copolymer, tocopherol, C12-13 pareth-23, c12-13 pareth-3, silica dimethyl silyate, algae extract, sodium hyaluronate, phenoxyethanol.

What does that mean to you as as a consumer?

Pros: Contains sunscreen - titanium dioxide.

Cons: In an earlier post, 8 Ways to Deal with Toxic Chemicals in Beauty Products, one of the suggestions was to consult Skin Deep and the Environmental Working Group. TRIETHANOLAMINE, according to the site, has the worst score in the ingredient analysis. The group also suggests triethanolamine is linked to cancer, allergies/immunotoxicity, organ system toxicity (non-reproductive).

According to blogger extraordinaire/dermatology student Future Derm, the research found in L’Oréal Skin Genesis is truly novel.

It stimulates the skin to produce more glycoaminoglycans (GAGs), polysaccharide chains composed of repeating disaccharide units linked to a core protein in the dermis. The major purpose of GAGs is to defend against water loss, as they bind large quantities of water, up to 1000 times their volume. For this reason, GAGs are also known as “natural moisturizing factors,” or NMFs. Although topical application of hyaluronic acid to the skin has been shown to moisturize the skin effectively, stimulating aged skin to mimic younger skin with the production of GAGs is a new advancement, as Dr. Debra Jaliman states in the October 2007 Allure magazine: “The research is amazing. It proves that these products produce long-term results by boosting the skin’s production of GAG, which are crucial in fighting aging.” A
full review of this product is available from October 04, 2007 here
.
Brains on Green: L'Oreal's patented Pro - Xylane™, a superior naturally - derived molecule so small it can penetrate skin's surface layers, is extracted from the beech wood plant, an environmentally friendly process known as Green Chemistry.

Brains on Beauty: Determinants used in analyzing if L'Oreal Skin Genesis products are efficacious in the following claims as indicated by L'Oreal:

  • Hydrates skin

  • Promotes collagen production
  • Adds fullness

It's my belief that Skin Genesis will hydrate skin, produce collagen and add fullness as a result of the hyuralonic acid, but it will not reverse the signs of aging. As per the Softness Test, it will soften the effects of the skin, which will make your skin look younger. It's more of an anti-aging product than a reverse-aging product.

Start young. Use often.

Following the lead of 40-year-old beautiful and pregnant Nicole Kidman who swears her beauty secret to tame her mane is John Frieda Frizz-Ease Serum ($9.09), we bought the Frizz Ease and gave it a test-drive.

Infused with silk protein this formula polishes frizz-prone strands, delivering a layer of crystal-clear gloss for amazingly shiny, frizz-free results. Daily use helps prevent frizz from worsening over time. Repels humidity, leaving hair silky, glossy & incredibly manageable whether you style straight or curly.

Beckie: It eliminated my unruly gray growth at the roots and smoothed my flyaways. When I inadvertently poofed my hair, the serum helped my straight bob quiet down.

Jamie: I wear my hair both curly and straight, and Frizz-Ease worked for both styles. My curly style can be uber dull, but the serum added major shine.

Celebrity gossip: It was reported that Nicole Kidman was going to join the likes of Britney Spears and Demi Moore and pose nude while pregnant for an unknown magazine cover. Nicole has denied this rumor, calling it nonsense.

It’s total nonsense. It was not that kind of a shoot. It’s madness to think I did that or was even asked to do that. I’m just looking forward to having and caring for our baby.

Beauteous Tuesday PM: Origins Organics Review

picture of Origins Organics Soothing Lip Balmpicture of Fifi le FumeUnlike zee French, flirtatious, and fragrant-in-a-P.U. kind of way Fifi Le Fume, the 36th Annual FiFi Award for best bath and body line of the year went to Origins Organics. The is the first full line of skin, body, and hair care products to be certified under the consistently stringent standards of the USDA National Organic Program.

For the past four weeks, I have had zee opportunity to use Origins Organic Soothing Lip Balm ($15) which smells deliciously like one of my addictions, Breyer vanilla ice cream. The delicious smelling balm softened my dry and cracked lips, and with the USDA certification, I felt better about ingesting the enormous amount of lip balm that I eat every year. The tube even has an organic look and feel to it. The only drawback is that it doesn't contain any sunscreen.

Ingredients:

  • Organic Cocoa Butter creates a superb protective barrier between skin and the environment.
  • Organic Coconut Oil is an effective moisturizer, and it helps rehydrate dry skin.
  • Organic Palm Oil softens and conditions skin and renews and helps eliminate dryness.
  • Organic Safflower Oil is almost odorless. It is light and quick to absorb oil.
With the USDA National Organic certification of the above-mentioned yummy ingredients and the fact that the average woman consumes between four to nine pounds of lipstick in her lifetime, Origins Organic Soothing Lip Balm will stay on my plate of cosmetics

And in the words of Loony-Tune-ease, "That's all folks!"

Keep moving,

Beauty Product Review: ProSilk Ceramic Digital Curling Iron

picture of ProSilk Ceramic Digital Curling Iron
With an emotional attachment to my flat iron that is bordering on psychotic and a relationship with straight hair that dates back to the Stone Age, it took a lot of courage for me to test a new hairstyling tool. I am sorry for cheating on you Flattie, but there's a new iron in town -- ProSilk Cermaic Digital Curling Iron (on sale for $109).

At my last salon visit, I toted ProSilk Ceramic Digitial Curling Iron with me, in hopes that Kevin, my stylist extraordinaire from Illusions, would help me test and review the product. (btw, my beauty secret is Kevin.)

picture of man holding ProSilk Ceramic Digital Curling Iron

First, let's go over the mission behind ProSilk:

The philosophy of Texan entrepreneur, David Yoon’s hair care line is that it features innovative styling tools specially designed to keep hair healthy and silky manageable. The secret behind ProSilk products is their state-of-the-art technology for practical hair care solution.

The Pros of ProSilk Digital Tourmaline Ceramic Digital Curling Iron :

  • Versatile "all in one" ergonomic design

  • Digital LCD temperature control

  • Creates silky shiny hair instantly

  • Instantly heats up to 428 degrees farenheight

  • Flash quick heating

  • Swivel cord that is 9 feet long

The Cons:

  • When Kevin was ready to use the curling iron, the digital readout said "error." He had to unplug the iron and plug it in again to get a heat reading.

According to ProSilk,
Heat from regular irons penetrates hair from the outside, thus exposing it to more heat and dryness, but Curlie's cermaic rapidly radiates far-infrared heat that penetrates the cortex of the hair shaft, exposing hair to minimum heat, preserving its natural moisture and luster.

picture of stylist curling a woman's hair
(Kevin using the ProSilk Curling Iron on my hair.)

A few tips from Kevin, artiste extraordinaire, about using irons:

  • To prevent heat damage, use a product like Aveda's Brilliant Damage Control ($14) as a pre-stying tool.

  • Divide the hair into sections and work with manageable amounts of hair. Do not attempt to curl too much hair at a time.

I don't know about you girls, but my hair looks its best right after Kevin blows it dry, so I asked him, "What's the best way to achieve the look of a DIY salon blow-out?" He smirked and said, "Go to the salon." That's an artiste for you .

Can you achieve the salon look at home?

Beauty Product Review: Quattro For Women Razor

picture of Quattro for Women razorI have never found much joy in shaving my legs. I do as the shaving gurus prescribe -- waiting until the end of my shower when my leg hair is soft and easier to remove -- but invariably, when I shave my legs, I look like a maimed circus contortionist. My shaving technique results in more nicks than Houdini had tricks up his sleeve.

Recently Schick sent me a Quattro for Women razor for review. Admittedly, I wasn't enthusiastic or excited about the razor or shaving my legs. I mean, it is just a razor, isn't it?

Well, not exactly. It's fuchsia pink -- one of my favorite colors. That got me excited. It is kind of Sex-And-The-City sexy looking. Okay, I am a bit more titillated.

But the question begs, "What makes a Quattro Woman's razor better than others?"

Until now, a woman looking for a high performance razor had to “borrow” a man’s razor. That changed with the Quattro For Women® razor. As the only women’s razor to boast four-blade technology and a sleek metal handle, it gives you precise
control over your shaving. How’s that for innovation?

Isn’t the Quattro For Women® razor just a men’s Quattro® painted fuchsia?

From the number of women who’ve been “borrowing” the men’s Quattro® razor, we know it has a lot of female fans. We could’ve just made it fuchsia and called it a ladies’ razor. Instead, the engineers at Schick® got busy creating a new razor that drew on the men’s Quattro® razor for inspiration, but was built specifically for a woman. The pivoting head, for example, is sized and shaped to reach the places a woman shaves.
Okay, so now I have all the facts. Let's hit the showers. My legs are all creamed up with L'Occitane Cade Shaving Cream and ready for attack. I pick up Quattro and know that I am not dealing with any old razor. This razor has moxie. This razor has pluck.

Now, the shave.

All four blades are in action.

Effortless.

Gentle.

No nicks.

Smooth.

And how smooth is this?

Enter to win $1,500 for you dream date from Schick Quattro.
You can find Schick Quattro Razor For Women at Walmart, Kmart, or Target for approximately $10. With all this smoothocity, I am sold on Quattro for Women. Thanks to the smart engineers who created a razor exclusively for women. That is brains on beauty.

Beauty Product Review: Sun Sauce Moisturizing Sunless Lotion

Luckily, I had an opportunity to test-drive Sun Sauce Moisturizing Sunless Lotion. It's a white girl's best friend. Believe me, without tanning, I'm sallow and ashen white. As a personal trainer, sallow and ashen white skin is not a good look for business. But I found a new best friend - Sun Sauce.

I have tried many self-tanning products, but I will endorse Sun Sauce as the very best sunless tanner EVER.

  • No streaking.
  • It doesn't come off on your clothes.
  • You actually look tan, not orange.
  • Pleasant smell.
  • Doesn't stain hands.
  • Contains anti-aging ingredients.
  • Hydrates skin.
  • Builds slowly.
At the gym, my Sun Sauce tan has received so many compliments.

"Were you just on vacay?"
"No, it's the Sauce."
"The sauce?"
"Sunless Sauce."
And when they don't ask, I tell all my clients about it.
Sun Sauce is formulated to deliver the highest levels of vitamins, minerals and rich botanicals to keep your skin looking and feeling its best. We have included the finest quality of the very best ingredients available such as shea butter, monoi oil, sweet almond oil, tea tree oil, unitrienol and healing vitamins that include A, B and E plus complex minerals to give your skin the best care possible.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend, and in this case, hit the Sauce!

La Mer - The Cleansing Lotion: Is It Worth the Price?

picture of La Mer, The Cleansing Lotion
Beauty Product Review: Recently I had the opportunity to test La Mer, The Cleansing Lotion ($65). Sacré bleu! My interest has been piqued since many celebs swear by this uber expensive beauty product. J.Lo bathes in La Mer. Kimmora Lee Simmons allegedly slathers the cream all over her body. It's one of Madonna's anti-aging secrets. But for $65, it had better be manifique!

The Cleansing Lotion derives its remarkable cleansing power from magnetized tourmaline and La Mer's exclusive Deconstructed Waters™. These positively charged waters enable this cleanser to thoroughly, yet tranquilly draw dirt, debris, makeup and pollutants out and away from the skin without harsh rubbing. Formulated with non-detergent ingredients essential to maintaining skin's delicate moisture barrier, the cleansers are so gentle, they will not upset the complexion, even with frequent use. The Cleansing Lotion is ideal for normal to dry skins and gentle enough to remove eye makeup. This versatile formula may be rinsed or tissued off.

My skin isn't the baby-soft body glove that I was born with. As I've aged, my skin gradually has become thinner and finely wrinkled. Oil-producing (sebaceous) glands have grown less active, leaving my skin drier. Menopause and the lack of estrogen has created a face drier than the Sahara Desert, so I was delighted to give this a test-drive. I know that a gentle cleanser would be advantageous to my skin care routine, but is La Mer Cleansing Lotion worth the price?

The Pros:

  • La Mer Cleansing Lotion doesn't contain any strong soaps, which can strip oil from skin, leaving skin dry.

  • La Mer Cleansing Lotion doesn't contain any additives, like perfumes or dyes, that can irritate skin.

  • La Mer Cleansing Lotion has a lovely floral fragrance.

  • La Mer’s Cleansing Lotion does not require harsh scrubbing or rubbing.
